WhatsApp Introduces Message Editing Feature with a 15-Minute Limit
In an eagerly awaited move, WhatsApp has officially announced the addition of a highly anticipated feature: message editing.
Mark Zuckerberg, in a Facebook post, revealed that users can now edit their sent messages within a 15-minute timeframe. To make edits, users can press and hold on a message, then select the edit option to modify its content. To indicate the changes, edited messages will display an "edited" tag next to the timestamp. However, the app does not retain a history of corrections, meaning other users won't be able to view previous versions of the edited messages.
"We are thrilled to offer you more control over your conversations, allowing you to correct misspellings or provide additional context to your messages. To edit a message within 15 minutes of sending it, simply tap and hold the message, then select the 'Edit' option from the menu," the company stated in a blog post.
WhatsApp Introduces Message Editing Feature with a 15-Minute Limit
WhatsApp has addressed a long-standing user demand by introducing the ability to edit messages. Previously, users were limited to either deleting a message entirely or sending a separate correction. Last year, WhatsApp extended the time limit to delete messages from 48 hours to 60 hours.
Competing platforms like Telegram and Signal have long offered message editing capabilities. Apple also joined the club with the introduction of message editing and unsending in iMessage with iOS 16. Twitter even introduced an edit button for paid users last year. While WhatsApp's 15-minute time limit for message editing may not match Telegram's 48-hour window, it still provides users with a valuable feature.
The editing option will be particularly useful for fixing typos and errors without the need for additional messages or causing confusion for recipients. When a message is deleted, it is replaced with a grayed-out note indicating that it was deleted, rather than being completely removed from the conversation.
According to Meta, the feature is already rolling out to users and will become available to everyone in the coming weeks.
