Prince Harry accused of 'snub' to queen Prince Harry Prince Harry was accused he will miss Queen Elizabeth's husband's memorial service Prince Harry again faced a new challenge with the royal family. Prince Harry refused to attend the memorial service for Queen Elizabeth's wife. Prince Harry has not explained why, but those around him speculate that Prince Harry will not attend the ceremony for security reasons. Prince Harry was accused Saturday of snubbing Queen Elizabeth II after announcing he will miss her late husband's memorial service, amid a legal dispute over his security protection in Britain. Two important events on the royal calendar will be missing senior family members later this month. While a spokesperson confirmed that Harry will skip the service in Westminster Abbey on March 29, he is reportedly set to attend the Invictus Games starting in the Netherlands just two weeks later. Buckingham Palace confirmed today that Queen Elizabeth has asked Prince Charles to take her place at Monday’s Commonwealth Day service in London. Royal sources tell BAZAAR.com that the monarch's decision comes with "regrets," but follows private discussions surrounding her comfort to travel over an hour from Windsor Castle to Westminster Abbey for the service. It is not, they say, related to any illness. After days of front-page coverage about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, The Sun newspaper carried the headline: "Harry's Phil snub." The March 29 Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Prince Philip will also be one royal down. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirms to BAZAAR that Prince Harry will not be visiting London this month, but hopes to see his grandmother "as soon as possible." Harry's absence from the United Kingdom may be related to the fact that a judge has yet to rule in the duke's legal challenge against the British Home Office regarding his security arrangements. Royal biographer Angela Levin accused the California-based Harry of "blackmail" regarding the service for his grandfather Prince Philip, after the UK government withdrew his royal protection detail. The second son to heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles "has snubbed the Duke of Edinburgh (Philip) but really he is snubbing the queen", Levin told UK media. Prince Philip, who was married to the queen for 73 years, died last April just weeks short of his 100th birthday. His funeral was held under strict coronavirus restrictions, with just 30 mourners including Harry. The queen sat alone, respecting the government guidelines. Given the restricted nature of the funeral, this month's memorial service is meant to offer an opportunity for a national celebration of the Duke of Edinburgh's long life and service. Harry's spokesperson Friday did not give a reason why he will miss it, but said he hopes to visit his grandmother "soon". The funeral was one of only two occasions that Harry has returned to the UK since he and wife Meghan quit royal life and moved to North America two years ago. Last month, his legal representative, Shaheed Fatima QC, told the High Court that Harry does not feel safe in Britain without access to adequate police protection, which he has denied the option of privately funding. "This claim is about the fact that the claimant does not feel safe when he is in the U.K. given the security arrangements that were applied to him in June 2021 and will continue to be applied to him if he decides to come back," Fatima said. Despite the two absences, other royals will be in attendance at both engagements. On March 14, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall; Prince William and Duchess Kate; and Princess Alexandra, the queen's cousin, will be at the Commonwealth Service, which will focus on the role that service plays in the lives of people and communities across the 54-country realm. An even wider gathering of family members will be present at the service for Prince Philip, who died in April of last year. The Westminster Abbey service will pay tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh's 99-year life and is one of a number of major occasions the queen has in her Platinum Jubilee schedule. As a result of their decision, the UK government withdrew his taxpayer-funded protection on visits back to Britain, a decision that Harry is challenging in the courts. Commentators queried why Harry would feel unsafe visiting Britain but not the Netherlands for the Invictus Games, a sporting event he founded for disabled military veterans that starts in The Hague on April 16. ITV News royal editor Chris Ship tweeted that Harry was pressing ahead with his attendance at the week-long event, but had "concluded he isn't safe in (the) UK without the access to intelligence he has asked for". Harry is filming a behind-the-scenes documentary about the Invictus Games as part of a multi-million-dollar deal with Netflix. Queen Elizabeth meanwhile has pulled out of attending another service in Westminster Abbey, for Commonwealth Day on Monday, after a period of fragile health including a mild bout of Covid.
