PSG clinched their record-breaking 11th Ligue 1 title as Lionel Messi set another milestone. The team secured the championship with a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday, putting them four points ahead of second-place Lens with one game remaining.
In the 59th minute, Lionel Messi, a World Cup winner, scored the opening goal for PSG, assisted by Kylian Mbappe. However, former PSG striker Kevin Gameiro equalized for Strasbourg in the 79th minute.
This goal marked Messi's 496th career league goal in Europe, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo's record for the most goals scored in Europe's top five leagues.
Meanwhile, Lens secured the second position, guaranteeing their automatic qualification for the upcoming season's Champions League, after a convincing 3-0 victory against relegated Ajaccio at home.
PSG's latest triumph in Ligue 1 surpassed the previous record held by Saint-Etienne, who secured their 10th title in 1981 but were subsequently relegated to the second division last season.
Coach Christophe Galtier commented, "Although everything wasn't perfect, this title is a testament to the efforts of the players. Becoming French champions is always a remarkable achievement."
"From a personal standpoint, I greatly appreciate it."
When questioned about his future at the club after completing one season in charge, Galtier responded, "I have come across various speculations, but there is a disparity between what is being written and what is actually happening."
PSG has secured nine out of their 11 titles since Qatari investors QSI took control 12 years ago, with their first triumph occurring in 2013. The club's other titles were claimed in 1986 and 1994.
"This is undoubtedly a historic moment for Paris Saint-Germain. This 11th Ligue 1 title is a testament to the collective efforts we have invested in over the past 12 years," stated PSG president Nasser al-Khelaïfi, who has been at the helm since 2011.
"To make history in Ligue 1 and surpass Saint-Etienne is a genuine source of pride."
The championship will be celebrated next Saturday at Parc des Princes when PSG hosts Clermont, which is anticipated to be Messi's final game for the club.
According to sources, earlier this month, it was revealed that Messi would be departing PSG once his contract expires this summer. The 35-year-old football icon has received an offer from Saudi Arabia, and there is also known interest from his former club, Barcelona, as well as Major League Soccer's Inter Miami.
Throughout this season, Messi has experienced occasional criticism from PSG fans due to a decline in his performance following his return from Argentina's World Cup victory. Additionally, he faced suspension from the club after taking an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia.
However, it was Messi's goal in the decisive match that allowed the fans to rejoice and granted him his 43rd major trophy in his illustrious career spanning both club and country.
