Robert Lewandowski has expressed his desire for Lionel Messi to return to FC Barcelona. The Polish striker, who plays for Barcelona, revealed that he would like to play alongside Messi for a second stint at the club. Messi will become a free agent on June 30 when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires. Despite reported big-money offers from the Middle East, Lewandowski hopes that Messi will choose to join him in Catalonia. In an interview with journalist Tomasz Wlodarczyk, Lewandowski praised Messi's evolved playing style and stated that his deep understanding of football would greatly benefit the team.
While there is speculation about Lionel Messi potentially playing in a deeper midfield role upon his return to FC Barcelona, Robert Lewandowski declined to comment on the matter and suggested directing the question to Xavi, the coach. Nevertheless, one thing is certain: with Messi in the team, Lewandowski, who is currently leading the race for the Pichichi top scorer award in Spain and has already secured the La Liga title in his debut season at Camp Nou, could be in contention for these prestigious accolades once again in the 2023/2024 season.
Expressing his satisfaction with the team's performance, Lewandowski stated that winning the league and the Super Cup was a significant accomplishment. He noted that the taste of this title differed from the ones he won during his time at Bayern Munich, where he secured eight consecutive titles, emphasizing that Barcelona is currently in a transitional phase and building something new.
Regarding his impressive tally of 32 goals in all competitions, Lewandowski mentioned that he would have gladly accepted such a tally if it had been offered to him before the start of the season.
Lewandowski acknowledged that his first year at Barcelona was challenging, particularly due to the interruption caused by the World Cup. With a disrupted pre-season, he believes that he can perform even better in his second year at the club.
The 34-year-old striker joined Barcelona last summer in a transfer worth €50 million ($54 million) and signed a contract until 2025/2026. According to AS, his total earnings from the contract are reported to be around €52 million.
