Bill Hader's Controversial Decision After 'Star Wars' Fan Encounter

Bill Hader has recently revealed that he no longer signs merchandise for fans due to a negative encounter with a "Star Wars" fan. During a late-night encounter, the fan tried to use their child to persuade Hader to sign a BB-8 toy with the intention of selling it online. Hader, who served as a voice consultant for the character in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," has received many autograph requests from fans over the years.

In a recent episode of the "Happy, Sad, Confused" podcast, Hader explained why he stopped signing autographs for fans. "I do not sign them," he said. "Autograph people don't like me. I won't sign things."

Hader went on to recount the experience that led to his decision. "You know what it was? I used to sign stuff, and then one time I saw somebody and they had their kid come up to me to sign a BB-8 thing and it was three in the morning," he said. "I was leaving the 'Inside Out' premiere and then we went to an after-party thing and it was super late and this guy kept his kid up all night. [He] was like, 'Go over there so he'll sign it so I can sell it online.'"

Despite his decision to no longer sign merchandise, Hader remains a popular figure among fans for his comedic and acting talents.

Hader expressed his disgust with the situation, saying, "I was like, 'That's messed up.' So now, I just have a general policy of not signing any of this stuff."

While director J.J. Abrams credited Hader with helping to bring BB-8 to life in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Hader explained that most of the voice work he attempted for the character just didn't pan out. "It's very kind of J.J. Abrams to put my name on it, but I did some voice work that didn't work," Hader revealed. "Then he brought me back in and asked, 'Do you want to do this?' It was a talk box thing, and I did that. But the reason he hasn't brought me back is because anyone can do it. It's like operating a machine. I tried some voice stuff that just didn't work, so I'm not really sure what Ben [Schwartz] did, but that was my experience with it."
