Jason Momoa, the star of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," expressed his disappointment with Warner Bros. for not adhering to his original ideas for the sequel. Momoa shared his thoughts on the matter with Men's Health, where he spoke about his love for the Aquaman character and how he tried to infuse heart and soul into it despite its history of being ridiculed and made fun of in comic books. While he doesn't feel pressure for the sequel to do well, he's committed to giving it his all, although he believes that it's ultimately in the hands of other people, such as the various directors who have their own ideas about who Aquaman is, as well as Warner Bros., who didn't fully follow the treatment that Momoa and his friend Brian Mendoza pitched for "The Lost Kingdom."
During the same interview, Momoa expressed his confusion over the box office success of the first Aquaman film. He stated, "To be completely honest, I was utterly bewildered by the positive reception that Aquaman received. I have done amazing things that no one has seen or cared about. In this industry, you never know. I don't approach a project thinking, 'Oh, this one's going to make a billion dollars.' I just do my best job."
Regarding the upcoming sequel, "The Lost Kingdom," director James Wan has confirmed that Aquaman will team up with his half-brother Orm to prevent Black Manta from releasing an ancient and powerful evil. Wan previously mentioned in 2021 that "The Lost Kingdom" draws significant inspiration from the cult horror movie "Planet of the Vampires." He had also mentioned the presence of horror elements in the film during a discussion in 2020.
Unfortunately, there have been reports of poor test screenings for Aquaman 2, which could spell trouble for the film's success. Some have speculated that these negative reactions may have contributed to rumors that Jason Momoa is considering playing Lobo in the DC Universe instead. However, DC Studios co-CEO and co-president James Gunn has not yet announced any plans for either character in the franchise.
