Matthew Perry is planning to remove any controversial references to Keanu Reeves in forthcoming versions of his memoir. The section in question pertains to Matthew Perry's attempt to reconcile with Keanu Reeves. The star of "Friends" made an appearance at the LA Times Festival of Books where, during a panel, he announced that he intends to delete all mentions of Reeves from the 2022 edition of his book "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing." Perry's memoir offers a frank account of his struggles with addiction and substance abuse, but he faced criticism in the past due to the inclusion of remarks about Reeves that some readers found objectionable. This includes an excerpt that made reference to the death of his friend River Phoenix in 1993.
In his memoir, Perry described River Phoenix as a beautiful man, both inside and out, who was too beautiful for this world. Perry also reflected on the fact that it often appears to be the most talented individuals who tragically pass away, while others, such as Keanu Reeves, continue to thrive. However, Perry faced criticism for this particular passage, which led him to issue an apology. In October 2022, he explained that he was a big fan of Reeves and had merely used his name at random. Perry expressed regret for his words and suggested that he should have used his own name instead. During the LA Times Festival of Books panel, Perry acknowledged his earlier comments about Reeves and characterized them as "a stupid thing" and "a mean thing to do."
During the panel, Perry explained that he removed Reeves' name from his memoir because he lives on the same street as him. He also confirmed that any future editions of the book will not feature Reeves' name. While Perry has already apologized to Reeves for his earlier comments, he admitted during the event that he has not yet apologized to him in person. Perry acknowledged that his comments were foolish and expressed a willingness to apologize to Reeves if they ever crossed paths.
