It is evident that Ariana Grande is lip-syncing in the first clip of Wicked, but that is common practice in movie musicals. Various behind-the-scenes videos have been released, one of which features Grande in the role of Glinda, revealing that the production of Jon M. Chu's two-part Wicked film is underway.
Ariana Grande's portrayal of Glinda is flawless and she looks impeccable. Entertainment Tonight was the first to release the official clip, which showcases Grande in the elaborate Munchkin-land set. Dressed in a magnificent tiara and Glinda's iconic pink gown, she commands attention with her regal presence. The film is currently being shot in England.
Since its release, the approximately two-and-a-half minute clip of Ariana Grande lip-syncing to the musical opener "No One Mourns The Wicked" has sparked some controversy. Lip-syncing is a common practice in movie musicals, except for recent examples such as Les Miserables and A Star Is Born. However, comments on the video's YouTube page indicate a debate over whether Grande is lip-syncing to her own vocals or a recording of Broadway's original Glinda, Kristen Chenoweth.
The higher refrains of the song resemble Chenoweth's soaring register, but it's still over a year before the release of the first installment of the two-part film. If Grande is filming using Chenoweth's vocal, it does not necessarily mean she won't sing her parts, given her own legendary high soprano.
The recent clip shows the general public Grande in full Glinda mode, elegantly extending her hands and wielding a glittery scepter in true good witch fashion. However, this is not the first glimpse of Grande on set that has been shared on the internet. On April 16, Jon M. Chu shared two character shots from the film on Twitter, one of Elphaba played by Cynthia Erivo and one of Grande's Glinda.
Despite the excitement that the character shots generated, they were also subject to immediate ridicule for their trendy, dimly-lit appearance. However, in response to a fan's comment, Jon M. Chu provided a reasonable explanation that applies to the controversy surrounding Ariana Grande's vocals as well: "This is just the first tease. Plenty of time to show more...stay tuned." Instead of dismissing the adaptation entirely, it is important to approach it with good faith and wait for further updates before making a final judgement.
