Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich for £25million. It was announced on Thursday that the Premier League champions had finalised negotiations with the German giants after a summer of speculation linking Thiago to Anfield and now they have sealed the deal
The Premier League title-holders have announced the midfielder has completed his move to Anfield, which is worth up to €30 million.
Jurgen Klopp has been chasing the signature of the Spain international throughout the transfer window, and the move was finally confirmed on Friday.
The 29-year-old, who won the treble with Bayern last season, has signed a four-year deal which will keep him at Liverpool until the summer of 2024.
Thiago will wear the No 6 jersey at Anfield, the same number he wore throughout his seven-year stint in Germany before turning down a new deal.
The Spain international told Liverpool’s official website: ‘I think it’s an amazing feeling. I was waiting for this moment for a long time and I am very, very happy to be here.
‘When the years are passing, you are trying to win as much as you can – and when you win, you want to win more. I think this club describes what I am as well; I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible.
‘It also [has] this kind of family [feeling] that I need because we [like to] have a very close relationship with the club and I think I will feel this, I will have this feeling, with this club as well.’
In July, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed Thiago had told the club he wanted a new challenge.
The former Barcelona star flew into Merseyside on Friday after a €25 million fee plus add-ons worth an additional €5 million were agreed.
On Thursday, Bayern boss Hansi Flick confirmed the departure of Thiago, and paid a gushing tribute to the player.
‘Thiago is an extraordinary player and was very important for us. My coaching team and I enjoyed working with him.
‘It was very emotional when we said goodbye,’ he began. ‘I can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person.
‘Thiago gave the team a lot of options and made us unpredictable, he solved things in ways you don’t expect. Now we’re losing yet another great player.
‘We are in contact with Hasan (Sporting Director of Bayern Munich) and we are confident that we can still do something.’
