Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin’s hybrid Savannah cat that Bieber and Hailey Baldwin, Sushi, controversially purchased in 2019, suffered an injury Tuesday, eight months after going missing for three weeks.
It’s been a tough few days to be in Justin Bieber’s orbit.
Headlines on Thursday focused on Carl Lentz, pastor of the Hillsong mega-church, being fired due to leadership issues, “breaches of trust” and “recent revelations of moral failures,” according to Religion News Service. The evangelical Lentz has been famous for cultivating high-profile celebrity friendships and, at one point, being Justin Bieber’s close spiritual advisor.
Justin Bieber’s wife, Hailey Baldwin, also dropped another bit of troubling news this week, revealing that Sushi, one of the couple’s part-wild Savannah cats, broke its leg Tuesday. Eight months earlier, the feline disappeared from the couple’s Hollywood home for three weeks before being returned home.
Baldwin shared a photo on Instagram Story that showed her or someone else holding the cat in what appears to be a vet’s office. Sushi, with his distinctive leopard-like spots, had his right foreleg in a cast. His name was written on the cast.
Baldwin wrote, “Trying to balance the stress of election and my cat breaking his arm in the same day.” Her message was followed with distressed face emojis. Sushi looked slightly stressed, too, but tranquil, perhaps due to the effects of painkillers.
Justin Bieber’s wife, Hailey Baldwin, didn’t explain how Sushi broke his leg. Joan Morris, pet expert and wildlife columnist for the Bay Area News Group, said broken legs aren’t common in cats, whose bodies are built to absorb jumps and landings. Such injuries might happen if the cat is stepped on or hit by a car. Morris also noted that Savannah cats, with their part-wild genes, are known for jumping at greater heights than regular domestic cats, which might lead to an increased potential for injury.
Known as “living room leopards,” Savannah cats are a fairly new breed of hybrids: part domestic shorthair and part African serval, a medium-sized, large-eared cat that preys on gazelles in the wild.
Justin Bieber and Baldwin purchased Sushi and his sister, Tuna, in August 2019 from a breeder, paying $20,000 for Sushi and another $15,000 for Tuna, the Daily Mail reported.
The purchase raised outcry by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and animal rescue groups because the couple paid so much money to a breeder, instead of giving a home to cats from a local shelter.
As exotic animals, Savannah cats are banned or restricted in some states, though not in California. The cats also are known to sometimes have trouble adjusting to living in people’s homes, often leading to them being abandoned.
In early March, Justin Bieber disclosed that he and Baldwin feared they had lost their pricey pet for good when he went missing.
Sushi was found “miles away” from their estate by another celebrity, Food Network star Sandra Lee, the Daily Mail reported at the time.
Justin Bieber never revealed how Sushi went missing in the first place. He only wrote that he and Baldwin had begun to lose hope that they would ever see their “baby” again.
Lee, a chef, author and longtime girlfriend of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, revealed on Instagram that she spotted Sushi on her property. Her description of the cat’s appearance made it clear he had endured a pretty grueling few weeks. She said he looked “thin, very emaciated,” and he was “starving, cold, exhausted” and “stuck with porcupine quills.”
