From exaggerated T-shirts worn as dresses or over basketball shorts, to sparkly chameleon-like suiting, this was fashion for everyone, which felt especially pertinent during these uncertain times. Here, six styling tricks to take from a powerful show that celebrated stylistic hybrids.
The first look out of the grand La Samaritaine venue – the LVMH-owned complex that has been 15 years in the making – was a mesh sweater emblazoned with the word “vote” in a comic-book style font. Message received loud and clear. Don’t forget clothes can be a powerful tool with which to transmit your opinion.
2- Vintage is just as good as new
From trio-pouch Chroma Key bags and angular Blade clutches to the rotund vanity case-inspired Carrousels, Nicolas Ghesquière spent lockdown conjuring up a multitude of new handbags for the house. He also dipped into the archive. The historic Cruiser model has been updated into a new capacious bucket bag with delicate gold accents. Start saving now (you’re spoilt for choice), but let that Cruiser inspire you to give your beloved LV monogram bags a second airing in the meantime.
3- Belt. Everything.
Ultra wide belts cinched the waists of loose-fitting trousers, oversized T-shirt dresses, cargo pants and fluid coats. Consider this your entry point to the house for spring/summer 2021.
4-Take your suits to the disco
Disco ball suits turned the heads of masked members of the press who dotted the green-screened space within the vast shopping and culture centre. The party dress seems so passé in comparison to this showstopper.
5- Cosy feet are officially chic
Ghesquière made toasty toes a fashion-forward proposition thanks to outdoorsy boots that made the models look like they were walking on marshmallows. You heard it here first: Ugg-esque puffer boots should no longer be confined to spaces beyond public view.
6- Forget the boyfriend shirt, SS21 is all about the boyfriend tee
Oversized T-shirts signalled a new Louis Vuitton silhouette, which Ghesquière said was “not clearly feminine or masculine, but in between”. Belt up with one of those aforementioned thick looped styles if you want to highlight your waist, or wear over basketball shorts for a skater vibe.
