Kanye West is a dangerous person or a mental illness? Kanye West Kanye West's behaviour is dangerous and we need to stop excusing it as part of his mental illness Kaye West's recent behavior has led many to believe that she is in love with Kim Kardashian. Kanye West has threatened Pete many times in public, and when he was criticized, Kanye West replied that it was just art. Kanye West's threats are sometimes linked to his mental illness. Amberleigh Jack is a Lifestyle and Entertainment reporter for Stuff. I’ve seen - and lived - the best and worst of mental illness. And I’ve learned a lot along the way. I’ve seen people I’m close to thrive while battling severe mental health issues. I’ve also seen plenty crash and burn. Some have lost everything – including their lives. One truth has been consistent along the way. If you don’t have people in your life to sit you down and demand you seek help when you really need it, chances are you won’t. Here’s another truth. Kanye West’s recent behaviour surrounding the divorce to his ex-wife Kim Kardashian is not normal behaviour. It’s not art. It’s not romantic. It looks dangerously like someone who’s spiralling. Excusing it as creativity, or a normal outlet or anything other than completely unacceptable is, in itself, completely unacceptable. The rapper has been allegedly posting on social media, encouraging his fans to harass Kim’s new boyfriend Pete Davidson, before deleting the posts. That’s not rational behaviour. He sent a truckload of roses to Kim’s house, despite her seeing someone else. Also, not rational behaviour. He most recently released a music video to the track Eazy with The Game, which depicts a clay-mation enactment of what seems to be the rapper kidnapping, beheading and burying alive Pete Davidson. Once again. That is not rational behaviour. It’s dangerous. And it needs to stop being excused under the guise of mental illness. Or art. Or creative brilliance. Ye, as he’s now legally named, has been pretty open about his battles with bipolar disorder in the past. That in itself is something to be celebrated. I’ve been there. I know it’s a terrifying and vulnerable step. But it’s also not a free pass to get away with actions so disturbing to the people around you that Kardashian allegedly messaged him, asking him to stop - out of fear of something happening to Davidson. Messages the rapper then posted publicly online. If Ye is spiralling, what’s desperately needed here is for someone close to him to intervene quickly. And herein lies the problem. He didn’t make that video by himself. And it seems nobody, anywhere along the way, thought to step in and put a stop to it. He has a huge fanbase. And far too many of them on Twitter are passing off his latest music video Eazy with the Game as harmless creative expression. The comments on the music video are filled with people calling the artist both brilliant and troubled. Yet many aren’t outright condemning the behaviour. “I like how only Kanye can make a song and after I’m like, ‘damn that was fire, this dude needs help,” one wrote. Divorce is messy and painful. Divorce in the public eye is no doubt even more so. But threats dressed up as art are vile, and are being passed off as emotional release rather than the potentially dangerous messages they are. Hey Ye, mental illness doesn’t give you a free pass to be vile. It certainly doesn’t give you freedom to harass the new boyfriend of the mother of your children. On his Instagram on Monday Kanye defended his music video by claiming “art is therapy”. He has since deleted the post. Sorry Ye, but no. If this is the art in question, that’s a really good sign you need actual therapy. “I don’t negotiate with therapists,” is a line from the rapper’s verse in Eazy. But perhaps it’s time he did. The top comments on that post are currently from verified accounts. Verified accounts that are praising him and his art. Verified accounts that aren’t suggesting Kanye maybe sit down and take a good hard look at his behaviour of late. Verified accounts that aren’t actively asking the question, “Is Kanye acting rationally?” The answer to which should be a resounding “no”.
