Kate Winslet is one of the most iconic actresses of our time. You may know her as the beloved star of Titanic, The Reader, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and so many other films, but she's got a whole lot of experiences and quirks that make her more than just a great actress — she's a truly fascinating person. For instance, can you believe she once won an Emmy award for literally playing herself?

1- Her training began very early.

It's no wonder that Kate's been recognized for her acting chops so many times — she began intensive training as a 10-year-old at the Redroofs Drama School in England. Can you spot her in this pic from the late 1980s?

2- She got her start in a kids' commercial.

When Kate was 11 years old, she starred in a commercial for Sugar Puffs, a sugary cereal. It was a sweet (hyuck hyuck) start to a massive career. Soon after, she got her first television role in a mini-series called Anglo Saxon Attitudes at the age of 17.

3- Before making it big, she also worked in a deli

In fact, she was reportedly making a pastrami sandwich when her agent told her she'd received the role of Juliet Hulme in Heavenly Creatures, for which she won British Film Actress of the Year during the London Film Critics' Circle in 1996.

4- Filming "Titanic" was extra cold for Kate

It was clearly the role of a lifetime, but playing Rose was no picnic. You know all those scenes where she's running, swimming and floating around the freezing water in Titanic? Yeah, she was the only actor not wearing a wetsuit. Talk about dedication!

5- But the role launched a lifelong friendship with Leonardo DiCaprio.

There's no questioning the fact that this pair had some serious onscreen chemistry in 1997, but they've also maintained a strong friendship through the years. "I think it's a testament to that fact that he's such a lovely person and that people really not only admire him, but also really like him and respect him," she told E! regarding the Oscars' recognition of Leo's film work, choking back tears. "I feel quite proud of that, it's lovely — I keep getting emotional when I talk about Leo."

6-Her kids refer to Leonardo DiCaprio as "Uncle Leo."

As if their friendship wasn't cute enough already, Kate's three children call Leo "Uncle Leo." Is it a Seinfeld reference or simply a cute nickname? We may never know.

7- She once admitted a pretty weird habit to us

In 2007, she told Good Housekeeping about a bizarre tick she has. "I'm a little bit obsessive about my feet," she said. "I pick at my feet. I'm sure that's what everyone wants to know!"
