Justin Bieber may be settling down these days, mostly staying out of the public eye and enjoying married life with Hailey, but his dramatic romance with Selena Gomez is one that fans still think about.
Taylor Swift isn't a Justin Bieber fan because she doesn't think that he treated her friend well. Even though Justin Bieber puts out some great new music regularly and also shares his thoughts with his Instagram followers, he hasn't been super honest about his relationship with Gomez... until recently.
While many fans are ready for Justin and Hailey to start a family, others are still caught up in his love story with Selena Gomez. He recently made a big admission about his relationship with Gomez, so let's take a look at what he said.
What Did The Biebs Say?
Fans have watched Bieber grow up and it's definitely true that when he was dating Selena Gomez, they were both super young.
Justin Bieber called himself "reckless" in his romance with Gomez. He said, “In my previous relationship, I went off and just went crazy and went wild, just was being reckless. This time, I took the time to really build myself and focus on me, and try to make the right decisions and all that sort of stuff. And yeah, I got better.”
He said that he was dealing with some "hurt" and he continued “I think I still was dealing with a lot of unforgiveness and all that sort of stuff. To be honest, I don’t even think I knew what I was struggling with at the time.”
Bieber has also gone into a bit more detail about what his life was like when he was 19 years old. He explained that he was having trouble being famous and because of the pressures and demands of that lifestyle, he started abusing substances.
He shared on Instagram how he felt: "I went from a 13-year-old boy from a small town to being praised left and right by the world with millions saying how much they loved me and how great I was," according to Insider.com.
The singer also talked about how he wasn't acting the way that he should have in his dating life. He said, "I became resentful, disrespectful to women, and angry" and continued, "My mom always said to treat women with respect. For me, that was always in my head while I was doing it, so I could never enjoy it."
Selena's Side Of The Story
It's pretty wild to hear Justin Bieber make this admission, as fans have been hearing for years that the relationship wasn't very healthy.
Selena Gomez has shared her side of the story, and she has talked about how painful it was to be with Justin.
She said during an interview on NPR in January 2020, "I've found the strength in it. It's dangerous to stay in a victim mentality. And I'm not being disrespectful. I do feel I was a victim to certain abuse." When the reporter posed the question of whether it was "emotional abuse," she said that it was.
Gomez also talked about the pride that she feels about herself and she said "I feel the strongest I've ever felt."
It must be tough for Hailey Bieber to constantly hear about Selena Gomez, and according to Elle.com, people often comment on her Instagram posts and talk about the pop singer. They tell Hailey that Justin still loves Selena and that he's going to date her again, and it's definitely pretty harsh.
Once, Hailey replied to a comment and set the record straight, letting Justin's fans know that she wouldn't be talking to them about this topic anymore. She said, "We're adults that have better things to do than waste time explaining something just so you can stop your delusional fantasies. I'm not going to sit here and let obsessive strangers try to tell me about my own husband, you wanna talk about somebodies [sic] husband then get ur own. G'night!!"
Fans are always going to want to hear more about Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber's epic relationship, and up until recently, it was only Gomez who was sharing how she felt about the time that they spent together. It's good to hear Justin share his side of the story and that he realizes that he made some mistakes. It sounds like they can both truly move on now and find happiness with other people, all while continuing to make music that their fans love.
